HINDU HERITAGE SUMMER CAMP

India Community Center, Rochester, NY

The best way to find yourself is to lose yourself in the service of others

Mahatma Gandhi

“Mhmm…It’s muffin day!” a camper shouts to her friends. Cooking fresh meals and caring for 150+ campers and counselors is big job, but the smiles when they come running back for seconds or when they get a band-aid for a boo-boo make it all worthwhile. We are seeking enthusiastic, caring volunteers to help in our kitchen and infirmary. Whether you're a first-time parent curious about camp life, an HHSC alum looking to reconnect, or a returning volunteer eager to jump back in, we welcome you. Come embrace the spirit of karma yoga and selfless service while creating new friendships with people across the country.

Kitchen

Fuel the fun! Help us prepare three delicious meals and serve two snacks a day for 150+ hungry campers, counselors, and staff! Kitchen volunteers play a vital role, from prepping ingredients (think washing and chopping veggies) to serving meals (with a smile:) and tackling post-meal cleanup (pots, pans, leftovers – the whole shebang!). You'll be part of the kitchen crew throughout the day (see typical day below). Questions? Just chat with our team or the onsite kitchen manager – we're happy to help!

Qualification(s): 17+ years of age and an excitement to help (no past kitchen experience needed!)

Please note that only volunteers supporting 6 or more consecutive meals (see start and end times below) will be housed on the campgrounds.

Meal Prep (Start) Service Clean-up (End)
Breakfast 7:15 AM 8:45 AM 10:00 AM
Lunch 10:00 AM 12:15 PM 2:00 PM
Snack 1 3:00 PM 3:30 PM 4:00 PM
Dinner 4:00 PM 6:15 PM 7:30 PM
Snack 2 8:15 PM 8:45 PM 9:30 PM

Medical

Be a camp hero! Help us keep our campers and counselors healthy and happy. Our infirmary volunteers provide 24/7 medical coverage from our on-site infirmary (a dedicated space). You'll be administering daily medications, treating common camp ailments (think bug bites, sore throats, runny noses, cuts, bruises, headaches, and tummy aches), and providing support in medical emergencies. For serious situations, we'll ensure campers and counselors get the care they need at a nearby urgent care or hospital. You'll also have the support of a medical assistant (usually a college-aged camp alum) who is there throughout the entire session.

Qualification(s): Licensed physician, emergency medical technician, or nurse willing to spend 3+ days at the camp
